Tonight we shall have apples dipped in honey and new fruit for the season and sweet challah - these will be round and have sultanas in them and we will also dip slices in honey. This is for a full, round, sweet year. Some have a tradition of the head of a fish - for the head of the year, and to swim at the front of the school (did I make that last one up?). Luckily we are squicking and just eat fish instead (gefilte fish).
New Year is a more reflective time. Gpd opens the Book of Life and pencils you in for the coming year. You have between now and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) to repent, forgive and be forgiven before he inscribes your fate in the Book of Life (or, um, not) at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.
So .. Chag Sameach to you all, Good Shabbos, Shana Tova and may you be inscribed in the Book of Life!
