weekend that was; manic week ahead

I guess I'm in react mode now till about mid next week. I have a lot on and there's only going to be time for *doing* and not so much time for *thinking*. There's some tough stuff going on personally and that's going to get a bit harder still. But maelkann came and spent the weekend with me and that made everything a lot easier - immersing myself in my own world for a bit. Harsh light of day to follow.

My taxes have become my craft du jour - I realised this yesterday when I noticed I hadn't done any sewing since finishing off the wall hanging. I've been picking up receipts and bank statements etc whenever I have a spare bit of time. It's good though because it means it's all really current in my head and I'm working through the whole enormous, scary project, one transaction at a time. I've finally managed to break down the whole thing into discrete and finite bits and that allows me to feel like I am moving forward. I'm mere hours away from being done. And that's very uplifting.

Saturday morning we met my Mum and her friend for breakfast. Then we did some shopping, dunno what we bought and maelkann headed off to do his own thing whilst I went to an appointment and then met jonathanstrahan for coffee. J and I were supposed to read and drink coffee and hang out. You so know we chaaated the whole time! J and I are very close friends and I value his friendship. I'm also lucky enough to consider him my mentor and it's always cool to run ideas past him, ask for guidance and also to learn how the business works. Cause if you want to know anything about SF publishing, J is the one to ask. And I guess, I want to build on what Twelfth Planet Press achieved in 2009 and that can be a bit scary and daunting. It means a lot to be able to have someone to go to and talk things through.

I headed home after coffee and editormum came over with bubby and vodkandlime popped in and we worked on some Swancon stuff. Took a good couple of hours - crankynick popped in for coffee then got bored and went off to do exciting motorbike things. maelkann came back and got bored and went and read comics in the other room. Bubby got crochety (Hey F - not just your bubby you hates 6pm). But eventually we were done and I feel a lot better about ... things ... come to our Swancon 36/Natcon 50 Launch on Sunday 6pm and check it out!

I dropped maelkann off at the rugby and went home and did more taxes. Then I picked him up from the rugby, we discovered my headlights look dodgy (well of course they do, I'd nearly gotten to the end of running car errands, can't have nothing on the bloody to do list now can we?). We went and saw a late night movie (OMG have you seen the uniforms for the new candystore at Innaloo yet?) - The Rebound. Um ... yeah. Not a movie destined for the classics shelf. Worst acting for Zeta Jones that I've seen in a while. Quite a lot of nonbelievable plot. And despite maelkann teasing that this was a movie based on my life (cougar divorcee with kids falls for a 25 year old man) - I don't think I actually liked the subtext (25 year old man is not mature enough for 45 year old mother of two. But is good when he comes back at 30 with a kid of his own.) This movie is missable. But was funny at one point when maelkann leaned over and said "I'm so sorry. This movie seems to have included all your triggers."

Sunday we went to Mia Cafe for brunch. And then did food shop and then maelkann napped - heh. Am still amused. I did yet more ... can you guess? ... taxes whilst watching Leap Year (another completely missable movie) and Terminator. I also did filing - yay filing! And did the major book packing and gluten free snack packing for Swancon.

Dinner at Goreng Goreng - yay! And maelkann was very chivalrous and sent me to browse at Planet Books whilst the food wait was 30 minutes. I bought The Walking Tree and brought that back and started reading it. I started reading the first few pages and had to stop and squee. I remember having bagels and coffee with Kaaron Warren one morning at World Fantasy Con in Saratoga Springs, NY in 2007. We had a good heart to heart about writing and publishing and she told me about this story she was writing. About a tree and an island ... and here I was ... three years later, holding that very story in my hands! There is so much I love about publishing and this is one of the top - talking ideas over with writers, hearing about their new projects and then seeing them come to fruition. It's so freaking awesome! And then I went back to reading the story!

After dinner maelkann had to fix some electrical wiring stuff for his dad and then we went home to find a block of chocolate had been attacked by a white and naughty dog! We both googled for various "dog eating chocolate" type information. But to be honest, it looked like he had attacked the cardboard box but didn't actually make it to the chocolate bit inside. And monitoring him did not show any signs of poisoning. I went back to the taxes. It's what I do.
