Announcing Submission Rec Service

A few people have been asking me about offering a service to recommend which markets they should be submitting their stories to so I thought I would trial something for the next 3 or so months. You know, in the lull for Last Short Story :-)

Submission Rec Service
Terms and Conditions

Submit your short story for consideration to subsrecservice@gmail.com .
You will receive a submission number and an estimated turnaround time for your response.
I will consider short shorts, flash, short stories and novelettes.
I will consider science fiction, fantasy, horror, new weird, steampunk, slipstream, specfic YA.
I will work on a two week turnaround initially.
Once I have read the story and written up the recomendations, I will invoice you $10 per short story via paypal.
On payment I will forward you the recommendations.

The reading period will commence November 15, 2008 and run through to January 31, 2009. However, I will accept short stories from today.

I will read your story and offer you a list of 5 recommended markets that I think might be suited to the style or theme or subgenre of your story. These 5 markets will be ranked in decreasing order of payrate.

I will not be providing comment or feedback on the story and I take no responsibility or surety of a sale. I will provide a list of potential markets that you may not have considered, based on my Last Short Story reading for 2007 and 2008.

Proceeds from this service will be going towards future Twelfth Planet Press projects.

Malcolm Turnball gives love advice

OPPOSITION Leader Malcolm Turnbull has some advice for the Australian people – and it's all about love.
"Loving and wooing is an exercise in persuasion and you don't want to frighten your true love away," Mr Turnbull said during an interview on Network Ten today.

Mr Turnbull said this advice proved to be a success for him when he met his wife Lucy, who he married in 1980.

"A part of me was saying you have got to marry this girl, but obviously I didn't want to frighten her.

He's so down with the people, eh?

Say it ain't so!

I have been hoping this was just a beat up news item ...

A FOOD sample supplied by a family who allege they were served gelato laced with frozen faeces at a Sydney hotel has tested positive for faecal matter

ETA I find it very disconcerting and upsetting that everytime I see this news story featured, there is a picture of a delicious looking ice cream Sunday. It's as if they want me to relate the two ... is it some kind of subliminal advertising by the Health Department? Some new campaign two tackle obesity?

Don't try and be my Daddy!
My Daddy has done a good job on his own and his main values are equality, fairness, truth, justice and transparency. He doesn't believe in censorship, and I turned out okay!

THE Federal Government is planning to make internet censorship compulsory for all Australians and could ban controversial websites on euthanasia or anorexia.

Australia's level of net censorship will put it in the same league as countries including China, Cuba, Iran and North Korea, and the Government will not let users opt out of the proposed national internet filter when it is introduced.

EFA board member Colin Jacobs said it would have little effect on illegal internet content, including child pornography, as it would not cover peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.

"If the Government would actually come out and say we're only targeting child pornography it would be a different debate," he said.

What's so wrong with freedom of speech, expression and experience? Aren't I grown up enough to decide whether I can look at sites about euthanasia, anorexia or porn? Isn't it my luxury, living in a "free" country to decide and then parent what happens in *my* house and what children in *my* care can and can't access? When do *I* get to grow up and make my *own* decisions?

LSS blog

Heh - Tansy and I are playing tag-team in the zeroing at LSS blog. I see she has taken my philosophy that if she and Ben both rate a story as a 3, I'm not going to bother reading it, where she has replaced me for her.

Which doesn't help when I am trying to winnow out as many shorts as I can and am now taking it down to the individual entry!

I have 569 to go...
