A joke!

Heh - this in my emails this morning. I was going to complain that I am tired. I've been going to bed earlier this week but tossing and turning all night. I must be over tired as I am waking up earlier than usual too. Here's a joke instead:

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.

He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour.

This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar: "I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to
my house for a nap."

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar:

"He lives in a home with 6 children -- 2 under the age of 3 -- he's trying to catch up on his sleep.

Can I come with him tomorrow?"

Ooh! Also to announce that I am adopting a dog after Swancon. This is not my big crazy thing I am thinking on. I actually decided this a couple of weeks ago and even put my hand up for a particular dog who was looking to be rehomed but someone else took her. I decided to wait till after Swancon since that will be a busy time and not the best for a new dog to settle into a bit of a nut house with people coming and going and out for a five day stretch. But after that, yep, it's time for the house to not be so quiet anymore.

Call for readers!

Hi! I'm looking for readers for a public reading. If you're going to be at Swancon on Saturday and would be willing to do a small reading in front of a medium-sized, potentially fancy dressed, crowd could you please contact me - either here or at girlie dot jones @ gmail dot com

Can pay in truffles and coffee :)

April Fools

We were talking a bit about it yesterday and can I just say that I really hate April Fool's Day. It's not just that it gives a bunch of people license to pull out jokes that aren't funny. It's that World Practical Joke Day is focussed on an element of "humour" that is not either clever or funny. Basically, practical jokes work by making someone the butt of the joke - it hinges on making one person the idiot or the gullible innocent whilst everyone else in on it, stands around and points and laughs (and is glad that it was already explained to them so they get it). The humour relies on in-jokes and exclusion of some in order to make the included feel superior and smarter. I don't like laughing *at* someone else. It has this pack hyenna feel to it.

Being smarter will always trump making someone else appear less smart than you.

Skimmers

ATM skimmers have accessed cards worth thousands of dollars using a device on a machine in Perth, police say.
The West Australian Major Fraud Squad said skimming devices had been used on at least two automatic teller machines in the Perth area in the past two weeks.

Detective Senior Sergeant Don Heise said devices had been found on machines at a shopping centre in the eastern suburb of Dianella and another in the beachside suburb of Scarborough.

So what? Like Dianella Plaza???
*thinks back to when last used the ATM - was it the week before last?*

*checks diary*

Nope last week. Do I just check my credit card statement to see if I got targetted?

Status report

Not quite 11pm and I am logging off. This not sleeping thing is seriously starting to jack me off.

It's not con season unless you aren't sure your book will be ready by the book launch and we got our emergency call at 4.30 pm - out of the paper we want. I'm sure it will be fine.
But I got 3 Book of Endings stories off my to do list and onto the other two's today.
I got my email inbox down under a 100 - first time in over a month.
Progressed a couple of other projects.
Started to get on top of Shiny slushing again.

And found a project for a spare piece of cover art we had - I know that's the wrong way round, but you know. Whatever :)
