Rock the Ditmars!

Ellen Datlow is currently offering ecopies of the Ditmar eligible works from her Del Rey Book of SF & F. Trust me when I tell you that you really really want to take her up on this offer.

"The Goosle" by Margo Lanagan
"Ardent Clouds" by Lucy Sussex
"Gladiolus Exposed" by Anna Tambour

Without a doubt, I think "The Goosle" was Margo Lanagan's best short work last year. Don't read it if you are squirmish or don't like squick or real ick and don't read it if you creep out easily. But if you want a truly horrifying, grotesque read that will send shivers down your spine, this is one not to miss.

On life

So I just found out that my contract will end on Sept 30 and it looks like we will go from a section of 23 people to 7. And I am not one of the 7. There may be more funding opportunities in about October but probably not wise to hang around til then.

Kinda sucks. J just pointed out that's 5 months away, plenty of time to look around for work. But I really hate job hunting and am assuming that there won't be much work coming up since everyone is cutting back. Yeah, that'd be me feeling a bit depressed about it. I'm just not very into the whole job application and interview thing. Though our manager is being really supportive about it all. Which of couse makes it suck even more.

I'm going to start putting my feelers out at this stage and hope something comes up. I'm not necessarily specifically looking in my area of expertise. I like change and I'm a quick learner. If you hear of anything, please flick me an email!

Have dog, will travel.

Margo Lanagan Ups the Ante - Rock the Ditmars

Over at Margo Lanagan's blog, she is offering ecopies of the rest of her Ditmar eligible short stories for consideration of Ditmar nominations. here.

* 'The Goosle' from The Del Rey Book of SF and Fantasy (ed. Ellen Datlow)
* 'Machine Maid' from Extraordinary Engines: The Definitive Steampunk Anthology (ed. Nick Gevers)
* 'Night of the Firstlings' from Eclipse Two (ed. Jonathan Strahan)
* 'The Fifth Star in the Southern Cross' from Dreaming Again (ed. Jack Dann)
* 'Eyelids of the Dawn' from New Australian Stories (ed. Aviva Tuffield)
* 'An Honest Day's Work' from The Starry Rift (ed. Jonathan Strahan)

If, like all you read from 2008 were Lanagan's work, you'd have a pretty positive viewpoint of Aussie short stories. At LSS we had hearty and passionate discussions between "Machine Maid" (SF) and "The Goosle" (NotSF - a horrible reworking of Hansel and Gretel)

Go forth, request copies (of these and the others) and take a position on the debate over which was the standout Lanagan for the year.

We are considering Eclipse 2 in 2009 at LSS due to its late publishing date. I reviewed Night of the Firstlings at the LSS blog earlier this year and love love love it. But then I get to say its her standout (maybe) for 2009 on a technicality :)

Also, whilst I'm here and pimping - there's a TED CHIANG of AWESOME in Eclipse 2. So ... Eclipse 2 for BEST COLLECTED WORK. OMG I can be a fangirl!

Me? I just love an election and want you to nominate! Something! Anything! Go on. You know you want to.
