Mr Hockey, the sole member of the Coalition in the chamber at time, yelled "No!" before he was joined by colleagues for a formal counting of the votes.
During the farcical process, Opposition Indigenous Affairs spokesman Tony Abbott complained about Ms Gillard yelling across the chamber.
"I would ... suggest that she stop shrieking at us," Mr Abbott said.
"I can't believe this person is Deputy Prime Minister!" Mr Hockey said.
